West Midlands Fire Service Home Safety Check Service (HSC) for Age UK
The West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) provide free of the charge the Home Fire Safety Check Service to our communities. This means, when requested, officers will visit the person’s house and check whether it your home is safe and safe from fire. People who are elderly, have poor mobility, drug and alcohol issues, children and young people and those who lead chaotic lifestyles are at higher risk of having a fire in the home but the risk can be reduced with helpful information provided by professional fire fighters.
Also, if required, the WMFS can provide FREE smoke alarms for your home as well as other fire protection devices such as fire retardant bedding and letter box protectors.
The WMFS also have Vulnerable Persons Officer’s (VPO) who are able to offer a more personalised service for those with more complex needs. They will be able to advise if specialised fire protection equipment is required, but can also signpost to other services/organisations when appropriate. Through a support team we also provide advice, education and equipment for the deaf and hard of hearing community.
How to refer for a HSC
- Call the Contact Centre on free phone 0800 389 5525; providing the same information that is requested on the Referral Form.
The Contact Centre will arrange the HSC at a time convenient. If you identified yourself as the person to contact, please ensure you pass the details on to the occupier. If WMFS are unable to access the home to undertake the HSC, they will make 3 further attempts before going back to the referrer.
